🕊️ About Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church

History

Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of faith and community in Tampa since its founding in 1926. Established in the home of Deacon Arthur James on Spruce Alley, the church was organized by Reverend Aaron Burney, his wife Frances, and their children. Sister Frances Burney named the church "Mount Pleasant Baptist Church." Their son, Herbert Burney, remained a dedicated member until his passing during Dr. Kirkland's tenure as pastor. Under the leadership of Reverend George W. Mitchell, who became pastor in 1937, the church experienced significant growth. At that time, Reverend Mitchell was also pastoring two other churches but eventually dedicated himself full-time to Mount Pleasant. Within three years, all debts were paid off, and the church was enlarged. Mt Pleasant MB Church.

The congregation's resilience was evident when they purchased a former sundry shop in Lincoln Park for $18,000, converting it into a place of worship. Members sat on boxes and wooden benches without backs, illuminated by kerosene lanterns and warmed by a potbelly stove. Baptisms were conducted in the Hillsborough River, and the choir, lacking a piano, practiced at Annie Bailey’s house and sang a cappella during services. Mt Pleasant MB Church.

Significant milestones in the church's history include:

  • 1954: Sale of the former church site on Spruce Street to the Hillsborough County School Board for $15,000.

  • 1955: March from the old church on Spruce Street to the new church on Laurel Street.
